This work can be divided into three elements. One is essay-type science fiction, the other is about the medium of mixed reality, and finally the intervention of art itself into society. Essay-style science fiction alternates past and future, memory and truth, and reality and fiction while citing real places and events. The story is presented mainly through video, and part of it uses the characteristics of mixed reality to develop the story using actual locations. From the viewpoint of site-specific art, we will focus on how these digital arts, whose production process is difficult to see, can intervene in society and work-in-progress.

Work description

short version

There is no danger of getting lost in a labyrinth, unlike a maze, as a labyrinth has only one path. However, we often experience a sense of being lost while navigating through it. Interestingly, within this physically limited space that offers just one path, we find ourselves unsure of our location and direction. Just like our life. Although we may think we are lost in life, in reality, we are not. This work about Labyrinth invites you to ask yourself where you are and where you are heading.

Keywords: labyrinth, getting lost, finite, infinite, repetition

Long version:

There is no danger of getting lost in a labyrinth, unlike a maze, as a labyrinth has only one path. However, we often experience a sense of being lost while navigating through it. We continuously turn left and right, encountering the same walls, ceilings, and grounds. The deeper we venture, the more confused we become. Interestingly, within this physically limited space that offers just one path, we find ourselves unsure of our location and direction. These characteristics of a labyrinth resonate with the complexities of life. Although we may think we are lost, in reality, we are not.

The labyrinth series began by compiling multiple photos of seas, aligning them along the horizon. The horizon, which symbolizes the boundless expanse, inspired me to create a visually striking structure of the labyrinth by connecting these horizons. was created using sea images taken every 5 minutes, from sunrise to sunset, at the same location on the southern coast of Gran Canaria.

was completed by printing it on velvet, emphasizing the effect of the ocean's surface and allowing for a comprehensive view of the entire labyrinth. On the other hand, the next work, , is a video installation that portrays the act of navigating a labyrinth formed by contrail lines. Designed to loop seamlessly, the video delivers a visual sensation of being lost through the repetition of similar information, not showing the whole labyrinth image.

The final piece of the series, , aims to depict the process of creating finite space by "folding" infinite space. In this work, I attempted to make a labyrinth path using the shadow of my body. To achieve this, I required a vast, open space with the same ground color to ensure a consistent shadow. For this purpose, I walked for two hours in a straight line with the sun at my back in the Sahara Desert. The resulting video captures this journey. The more the shadow rotates, the more labyrinth paths develop.

small introduction..

Kyuwon Moon is studying in KHM from 2020. loves exmedia-lab. made Blue Mask + Blue Book in 2023. explores the hidden connections that exist between them, beyond the territory of physical visibility.

Blue Mask

Blue Mask can be opened and closed, allowing for selective customization of sensory experiences. I regard this object as a new skin, and it was designed to accept and reject various stimuli (information) by overlaying it on the skin. The mask is a wearable object, has holes and covers for all sensory organs such as the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. plus, all the covers are closed, the wearer experiences a sense of darkness and can only perceive the gentle touch of the soft material against their skin.

++ during the Rundgang, Blue Mask is shown as a kinetic sculpture instead of being worn.

Blue Book

Blue Book was made, providing guidance on mask usage. The punched cover of the book serves as both a cover and a table of contents.

Laser cutting is a digital manufacturing technology that works with 2D vector files. Our cutting device is a CO2 laser, 30 watts, which works with a gas mixture. The cutting process begins when energy is supplied to the mixture, which is then passed through various mirror lenses that focus the laser.

The laser beam is directed through a nozzle directly onto the material due to the arrangement of the mirrors. When it comes into contact with the surface, it vaporizes the material following the drawing lines of the vector file. The part of the material that is melted by the laser is called the kerf and must be taken into account in the design.

Our machine at the exmedia-lab is called VLS2.30.

this folder is meant for your texts/ tags/ thoughts/ plans/ notes regarding our common presentation/ rundgang idea as mentioned. you can create your own folder with your plans and materials if you like.

--> for our idea to create a a flyer / a map/ signs.... you can add anything related to your work/ideas/thoughts:
a) with which we could make connections between us, to the space, to other spaces during rundgang...
b) mostly language-related (german/english/denglish/corean/spanish/ japanese/ code/ signs and and and)....
c) other materials

or how naoto put it:

  1. keywords about work / material / interest / inspiration / references / spaces / etc (to make them into hashtags - and don’t shy away from putting trivial things, that actually helps! Like my cards: where I’m from, what I eat, what I see)

and/or

  1. some texts - which can be written specifically for this "flyer" or from other writings.

Risograph

Risograph is a brand of digital duplicators manufactured by the Riso Kagaku Corporation, that are designed mainly for high-volume photocopying and printing. It was released in japan in 1980. It is sometimes called a printer-duplicator, as newer models can be used as a network printer as well as a stand-alone duplicator. When printing or copying many duplicates (generally more than 100) of the same content, it is typically far less expensive per page than a conventional photocopier, laser printer, or inkjet printer.
